That’s probably what he’s going to say at The Academy Awards tonight when he recieves his Oscar for the best supporting role… Long time since I saw somebody play a character so well…

District 9 is a movie directed by South African Neil Blomkamp and produced by Peter “L.o.t.R.” Jackson that handles about a group of aliens, who stranded on earth against their will. Fast, smart and very unexpectedly good. Make sure you go and see that one.
A short movie by Spike Jonze in collaboration with Absolut Vodka. A true robot love story. Premieres at the Sundance film festival. Go and see that one.
The Black Gestapo: a 1 star movie from 1975 you better go and see… Sounds just like an all black dart team. Also eyebrow raising. It sure delivers nice images though.
Stumbled upon this scene from one of my favorite youth movies: Airplane! The movie was directed by the Zucker brothers, and it was a kick off for more movies with the same kind of humor, like Top Secret and later the Police Squad and Naked Gun series. For the youngsters among us: Go and see!
Note: the pilot on the left who plays Roger is in fact Kareem Abdul Jabbar, one of the best NBA basketball players of all time. He was, together with Magic Johnson (you know, the one with aids), very succesful for the LA Lakers in the late 80’s, early 90’s. Also Kareem played another bizarre character, who had to fight the legendary Bruce Lee in Game of Death, another favorite youth movie of mine. Also go and see that one peeps!
This spring a documentary is coming out about the influential Swiss designer Herbert Matter (1907-1948). Above a clip of the road through literally hundereds of sketches before he got to the final logo for the New Haven Railroad company.

If you read our previous blogpost about Iceland and its heroe Jon Pall Sigmarsson, and you didn’t grow up in the 80ies, go and see this documentary about the world strongest man of all time. As stated below, we couldn’t find his grave but we at least did something to honour the man.
(Thanks Justin!)
A documentary about a photo of a man jumping from the twin towers during 9/11. The film is a quest to identify the person on the picture. Heavy stuff but a must to see.
Never heard about this movie until today. Have not much of an idea where the movie is about the trailer surely grabbed me.
(Thanks KRD!)
In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.
Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth”
With quite some famous artists like Harmony Korine, Ed templeton and Shepard Fairey. More here.
What a killer name for a movie. And what about that concept?
Faaaan-There’s something big out there-tastic.
Life’s not always fun. That proves ‘The Bridge’, a breathtaking documentary about The Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco. Just watch the first choking minutes of this docu to the end and you’ll see why.
(Thanks Vio!)
The latest hype in quick spreading online guerrilla media is without a doubt Zeitgeist. These mystical documentaries claim telling the truth about Christianity, 9/11 and the world banking system. Once you start watching you can’t stop, due to the atmospheric voices, images and sound. And ofcourse it smells like conspiracy big time but the arguments they bring up really made us think.
Check out their website here.
It’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature… it can be HORRIFYING! A Scientist, played by good old Donald Pleasence, experiments with plants en humans. Horror form the seventies.
Absolutely the best movie of 2008. A story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century Texas oil entrepeneur in the early days of the business. Just watch that trailer and hear the intriging voice of Daniel Day Lewis, who we think is becoming the greatest actor of this decade, say: “Ladies and gentleman, if I say I’m an oil man.. you will agree.” Mixed with the atmospheric film music made by Johnny Greenwood, lead guitarist in Radiohead, it gives us shivering moments. 6 out of 5. (Thanks Rod!)
A documentary about this older couple, a postal clerck and a librarian, who stroll the New York art scene for decades now. Resulting in one of the weirdest and most important art collections in history. It won the Audience Award on Silverdocs.
The story of Madchester (read Manchester) starting from 1976 when Cambridge educated Tony Wilson, local TV presenter, attends an early Sex Pistols gig in his hometown. Triggered by this magical moment he sets up Factory Records, now a legendary record label on which bands like Joy Division (later New Order) and the Happy Mondays signed. Wilson also started up legenadry club The Hacienda where the birth of European house music took place.
Hilarious role from Steve Coogan (Wilson) and others with loads of drugs and dreams. 4 out of 5.
Made in Queens is a documentary about these young folks who build complete soundsystems on their bikes. When we were young we attached a washing peg with a playing card to our wheel so it made a sound like ‘tttrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr’ when you drove your bmx. These youngsters do this. Creative, we say.
The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. A documentary which follows a middle school science teacher as he battles a hot sauce mogul for the Guinness World Record on the arcade classic Donkey Kong. Prepare for some fantastic footage and unforgetable one liners from arcade hall youth. (Thanks Pikkesnijder!)
