Time travel

January 30th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

As you may have noticed we at Kobayashi studios are science fanatics. Now, here’s the story of this American professor who claims he’s building a tiny time machine that will be ready to use not far from now. Crazy idea? Never know. We tend to stand on the side of the nutty professors with crazy ideas and boiling glass tubes, because, a: we are hopeless romatics, and, b: Wasn’t Jules Verne almost lynched for believing we could fly to the moon?

Hello!

The Pedestrian Project

January 29th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

Ahhh a nightmare! They came climbing off their public signs and are now terrorising the world! Aaaarghl… Noooh, its just The Pedestrian Project, created by a New Yorker Artist/Costume Designer, called Yvette Helin. More pix here.

The Designers Republic Is Dead

January 29th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

Well known and much copied design firm The Designers Republic closed their doors after 23 years. DR’s Ian Anderson: “We’d lost a couple of clients, didn’t win a couple of pitches, got a tax bill which should have been sorted out and wasn’t and a major client who didn’t pay the money they owed us – in themselves any of those things would have been fine but when they come all at once there’s not much you can do.”

We remember going to Hasselt (Belgium) with a mini van some 5 years back to view their exposition when they still were a blooming studio. Shame…

Bottoms up

Nice packaging design for a bottle of whisky in form of a doctor’s recipe or something.

Spending Time With Poster Boy

January 28th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

Check out this NY street artist who bombs the NY subways with a razor blade instead of spraycans. He cuts pieces from poster ads and switches them to create new images. Très frois!

But they give us joy (thanks Tim).

Souvenir de Chine

January 27th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

A kaleidoscope made of live animals. Now that’s what we call inventive. Körner Union thought so too and made this idea into a video clip for Larytta, trackname Souvenir de Chine.

Eyebrows Dance

January 26th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

Funny commercial for some kind of milk chocolate made by Fallon. Cool that they used 80s electro track Don’t Stop The Rock. We can’t figure out though if the eyebrow movement of the kids is real or ’shopped’? What do you think?

This is the end…

January 26th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

…my only friend, the end. A collection of ‘end’ shots of movies throughout the years.

Quite nice: Ideographic Alphabet

January 25th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

But then again.. what the hell are you going to do with it? Like: “Ahh, great, we created the whole alphabet using only a couple of chairs! …So.. what are we going to do now?”

Our plans for 2009

January 23rd, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

Hi there dear growing group of readers!

It’s time to share some of our plans for the future with you. First of all, a new website with new goodies is being build as we speak. Hopefully it will be ready before the end of january (probably not, but we’ll do our best). This new website will have, besides a fresh new layout, some new features. Like a podcast player. Yes, we are planning to go podcasting as well. The first one will be due the end of february when we will cover our trip to New York with some of the Archie’s friends.

Next to podcasts and our usual 2 posts every day (we try, we try) we will create more of our own. Like graphics, tunes, shortmovies, and mixtapes for the likes of you all. So if you’re interested keep posted and spread the word.

And offcourse many thanks for sharing, reading and commenting! And keep on tipping me!

Cheers, Archibald.

Quite nice: Kari Altmann

Best track ever, Part VIII: Illuminate

January 22nd, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

By Orbital with the voice of David Gray. We do not like David Gray to say the least, but this combination with Orbital makes it The best track ever!

Into some fine minimal and deephouse and living in the Tilburg area? Come join us @ Klub Tilt in Poppodium 013 on friday next week. Dj Estroe as well as local hero and friend Jonathan Mendiola will be hitting the decks that night. Note: we are sponsoring Klub Tilt by doing some graphics.

Flexx.be

January 21st, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

We remember buying some records of this Belgian (Turnhout) based Dj called Diepvries some years back. Back then had an idea to start an online vinyl record shop. Nowadays his shop has grown out to a international, well respected store where you can buy some exceptional vinyl and mp3’s. On top of that he started his own label. We like that ’stick to your plan’ kind of people who build stuff from scratch. Read his blog here.

Go and see: The Mutations

January 21st, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

It’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature… it can be HORRIFYING! A Scientist, played by good old Donald Pleasence, experiments with plants en humans. Horror form the seventies.

Seasick Steve

January 14th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

Is a real American, trainhopping, jailbirding, cowboying, carnival working, migrant farm picking, occassional tramping, near-fatal heart attack surviving old hobo playing raw blues on selfmade guitars with only two strings.

Nice collection of pictures of London shop windows.

Google Earth updates

January 13th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

We just downloaded the new Google Earth update with fancy new 3d features. There’s even, quote “a unknown feature that allows you to jump from building to building like you are Spiderman”. Think about how enhanced this product will be in, lets say 50 years?

Break Machine - Street Dance

January 13th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

We bought this 12″ when it came out in 1983, but we remember we doubted a long time before actually buying the disc, since it was pretty daft then if you know what we mean. But rarely hiphop vinyl came to that metropool called Tilburg at that time, so we gave it a go. Too bad we don’t have it anymore because one of us sold it at Tommy’s second hand shop some 20 years ago alongside many other great 12″s to get money for a certain slot mahine addiction… asshole!

Laurent Garnier @ Cafe d’Anvers

January 12th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

Last friday a we went to good old Cafe d’Anvers, one of Belgiums most (in)famous clubs, to witness one of the last dj sets ever (4hrs!) of one of the greatest dj’s ever: Laurent Garnier. It was minus 13 degrees outside while inside it was hot as hell… Great night. Keep on watching o the end, then you see why.

Shreds

Need some laughing on a monday morning like this? Search for ’shreds’ on youtube. Pretty old but still hilarious. Here are two of our favourites.

Theo Jansen

January 11th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

Dutch artist Theo Jansen demonstrates the amazingly lifelike kinetic sculptures he builds from plastic tubes and lemonade bottles. His creatures are designed to move — and even survive — on their own. (thanks Vio!)

Glenn Brown

January 11th, 2009 Archibald Kobayashi

English painter Glenn Brown always creates these complex illusionary images made of thick layers of oil paint. He was nominated for the Turner prize in 2000.
